VOTEVETS.ORG ENDORSES JOE SESTAK FOR PA SENATE SEAT

Sestak will bring "the same honesty, integrity, and hard work with which he's always served America"

Warns outside groups to not engage in ‘Swift Boat' attacks

WASHINGTON - The largest progressive group of veterans in America, with over 105,000 veterans and civilian supporters, today endorsed Congressman and Afghanistan Veteran Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania's Democratic primary.  VoteVets.org PAC will immediately send money to his campaign, and rally its base to send support, as well.

"Joe Sestak will bring the same honesty, integrity, and hard work with which he's always served America to the U.S. Senate," said Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org, Jon Soltz.  "Joe Sestak understands the unique challenges facing America - especially those of us who served and are serving, and stands firm on his principles.  You always know where Joe Sestak stands."

The group also issued a stern warning to other groups and politicians - any attempt to engage in the same ‘Swift Boat' tactics that smeared war heroes like Max Cleland (who lost both legs and an arm in Vietman) and John Kerry (who was awarded a Purple Heart) will be met forcefully and swiftly.

"We will be watching closely, and will not allow anyone to bring ‘Swift Boating' to Pennsylvania.  Anyone who is thinking about doing so is duly warned - veterans will not stand for it.  We will not allow those kinds of attacks on any veterans," Soltz added.

Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 to represent the 7th Congressional District where he was born and raised. During a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, Sestak attained the rank of 3-star Admiral and served in the White House, Pentagon, and in operational commands at sea.

He is the son of a first-generation American who served his country as a Navy Captain in World War II. Following in his father's footsteps, Joe went to Annapolis, where he graduated second in his class, before embarking on a career of military service. He served as Director for Defense Policy in President Bill Clinton's National Security Council, oversaw the Navy's warfare budget as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and led a series of commands at sea, culminating in command of the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (30 ships, 100 aircraft, and 15,000 sailors and marines) during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In our time of national crisis in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the Navy turned to Joe Sestak to head "Deep Blue," the Navy anti-terrorism unit formed in response to the attacks.

Sestak is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He attended the Naval Academy and later earned a Ph.d. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.  After retiring from the Navy, Joe returned home to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District, where his parents and much of his family still reside.

VoteVets.org PAC seeks to elect veterans to Congress, primarily those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It endorsed Sestak in his run for Congress in 2006.  Other successful endorsed candidates include now-Congressmen Patrick Murphy, Chris Carney, Tim Walz, John Boccieri, Walt Minnick, Eric Massa, and Gary Peters.  The group also holds accountable those elected officials who do not vote in the best interests of troops and veterans, and was key in defeating former Senators Rick Santorum, George Allen, Conrad Burns, and Jim Talent, and many members of the House of Representatives.
