As Hearings on VA Privatization Begin, Veterans Group Sounds Alarm

WASHINGTON, DC - As hearings begin this morning on a massive move towards privatization of Veterans Care, through the so-called CARE (Coordinated Access & Rewarding Experiences) Act, the nation's largest progressive veterans group, with over 500,000 supporters, is stating that the bill is not about giving veterans quality care, but the first step towards privatization of other sacred programs.

In a statement, Iraq War Veteran and Director of Government Relations, Will Fischer said:

"There is a reason that so many arch-conservative groups have their eye on moving the VA towards privatization - because if they can privatize the VA, they can privatize anything.  Medicare. Medicaid. Social Security. Schools.  The Koch Brothers and their conservative think tank pals don't care about veterans. They care about dismantling the social safety net that even Ronald Reagan said we needed to protect.

For those of us who actually care about veterans, we know that moving towards voucherization and privatization will starve the VA, to the benefit of for-profit providers, until the VA withers on the vine and dies. Any Member of Congress who votes for this plan is not just voting to put veterans at greater risk, they're voting to move the benefits all Americans have earned towards privatization.  This is the first domino."
