CREDO Action and Deliver Petition Signed by Nearly 120,000 Americans

Washington, DC -As Congress works to finalize the Defense Budget, Republicans are trying to block the military from producing biofuels and other renewables that will save lives, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.  CREDO Action and are delivering a petition to Congress today with nearly 120,000 signatures, calling on Senate Republicans to "Stop forcing the military to use dirty energy."

Last month, the House of Representatives passed a 2013 defense budget which included provisions that would block the military from purchasing, developing and even testing biofuels. And the Senate Armed Services Committee followed suit shortly thereafter with the help of big oil Democrats Sens.  Jim Webb and Joe Manchin.

"Republicans are pledging their allegiance to dirty oil at the expense of our soldiers serving overseas," said Elijah Zarlin, Campaign Manager for CREDO Action. "As military fossil fuel dependence continues to cost troops' lives, it's shocking that Republicans are so owned by Big Oil that they would literally force the military to use dirty energy it doesn't want."

"You would think that Republicans would be on board with allowing the military the flexibility it needs to experiment with solar, wind, and biofuels in an attempt to save lives and be more effective," said Jon Soltz, an Iraq War Veteran and Co-Founder of "Sadly, there is nothing, it seems, that Republicans value more than delivering for their dirty oil campaign donors."

According to a 2009 study by the military, one in eight casualties in Iraq came as a result of protecting fuel convoys. And the rising costs of oil will put the military more than $3 billion over-budget this year, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month.

The petition reads: "It is outrageous that Republicans are working to block the military from developing biofuels and other renewable sources of energy that will save lives and save money. Stop protecting Big Oil's profits at the expense of our troops and our national security."
