Iraq War Commander Responds to Rumsfeld Endorsement of Trump

"It's clear that neocon interventionists have found their puppet."

WASHINGTON, DC – The largest progressive veterans group in America, VoteVets.org, today reacted to news that former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has endorsed Donald Trump for President [1].

“It’s clear that neocon interventionists have found their puppet,” said retired Major General Paul D. Eaton, a former commander in Iraq and Senior Adviser to VoteVets.org. “From Donald Rumsfeld to Dick Cheney, neocons see in Trump a person who was for the war in Iraq, and continues to show an alarming willingness to launch a new war in the Middle East.  It is clear that they feel that Trump is their perfect agent for a return to reckless Middle East ventures.”

Dick Cheney endorsed Trump last month [2].  Meanwhile, former George H.W. Bush national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, who penned an op-ed warning against invading Iraq [3], endorsed Hillary Clinton yesterday.

Despite statements meant to rewrite history, multiple fact checks have found that Donald Trump’s only statements prior to the war in Iraq were supportive [4].

Earlier this year, in a debate [5], Trump said “We really have no choice” regarding sending ground troops into the region.   “I'm hearing numbers of 20 to 30,000. We have to knock them out fast."

Asked later by NBC’s Chuck Todd why he would send troops back into the region, Trump made clear that he had one goal.

“You go and knock the hell out of the oil, take back the oil,” he told Todd [6].

Founded in 2006, and backed by over 400,000 supporters, the mission of VoteVets.org Action Fund is to use public issue campaigns and direct outreach to lawmakers to ensure that troops abroad have what they need to complete their missions, and receive the care they deserve when they get home.  VoteVets.org also recognizes veterans as a vital part of the fabric of our country and will work to protect veterans' interests in their day-to-day lives.   VoteVets.org is committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world - with force when necessary - to protect America. While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.
