Washington, DC - The largest group of progressive veterans in America, which was formed in 2006 in opposition to the war in Iraq,, released the following statement regarding the announcement that all troops will be leaving Iraq by year's end.

Richard Allen Smith, an Afghanistan Veteran and Vice Chairman of, said in a statement:

“A complete drawdown from Iraq was the only move the President could make, given the Status of Forces Agreement negotiated by President Bush, and the fact that insurgents promised increased attacks on Americans if we had stayed.  We’re extremely pleased that the President will honor that agreement, and finally bring the war in Iraq to a close.  This war was misguided from the start – based on false and faulty intelligence, a distraction from the war against the terrorists who attacked us on September 11, 2001, and a drain on our military.  This was not an easy operation to wrap-up, but President Obama has done so – first by pulling back our troops and redeploying a large number of them, and now by bringing all of our troops home.  Iraq’s future is now in the hands of the Iraqi people, as it should be.  We have done all possibly can for them.  Now, it is up to them to decide their future.”

Founded in 2006,  and backed by over 100,000 members, the mission of is to use public issue campaigns and direct outreach to lawmakers to ensure that troops abroad have what they need to complete their missions, and receive the care they deserve when they get home. also recognizes veterans as a vital part of the fabric of our country and will work to protect veterans' interests in their day-to-day lives. is committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world - with force when necessary - to protect America.  While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.
