Statement of VoteVets On Iraqi Interpreter Being Detained Because of Trump Executive Order

NEW YORK, NY – In response to news that an Iraqi man who aided the US Military as an interpreter and came here with his family was being detained because of Donald Trump’s executive order on refugees and entry of Muslims from certain countries into the US, the largest progressive group of veterans in America, VoteVets, released the following statement.

Jon Soltz, Iraq War veteran and Chairman of VoteVets said:

“The idea that we could be detaining Iraqi interpreters who put their lives on the line to help troops like myself in Iraq is disgraceful. The thought that it is the result of Donald Trump's hateful, stupid, poorly-constructed executive order is infuriating.

A legitimate and prepared president would have never, ever signed such a piece of ill-thought-out garbage.

Not only does this not do anything to protect America, but it now sends the message that even if you put your life on the line to help America, if you are Muslim we don't want you here. There is no better recruiting tool for ISIS than that.

It also tells the many Muslims currently risking their lives and their family’s lives to help our fight against ISIS that there’s little incentive to do so – that if you need us to take you in, we won’t be there to help you, or your family.  That hurts our support in fighting ISIS, placing even more of a burden on the US military.”
