Veterans group outraged that Toomey put oil buddies over American security -- Cheers defeat of his misguided amendment

Pittsburgh, Penn. – The largest progressive veterans group in America, with over 400,000 veterans, military families and civilian supporters, is today criticizing Senator Pat Toomey for introducing an amendment that would end a key part of the Renewable Fuel Standard, but expressing relief that it was quickly dispatched with by the Senate Banking Committee.

Yesterday, Toomey announced that he would attempt to attach an amendment that would end a key provision of the RFS – the requirement to blend traditional ethanol-based renewable fuels into U.S. gasoline.   Today, his amendment failed in the Senate Committee on Banking, by a 15-7 vote.

“Biofuels are a key part of energy independence and energy security,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran, and Chairman of VoteVets.org.  “It is jarring to see a sitting U.S. Senator thumb his nose at our national security, just so he can repay his oil buddies.  We need to figure out ways to use less oil.  Pat Toomey is trying to make sure that we use more, and that his Big Oil pals make more profit as a result.  It’s was a disgrace, but thankfully common sense won out, over Pat Toomey.”

Indeed, Senator Toomey owes a lot to the oil and gas industry.  According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the industry has contributed $552,816to Pat Toomey over the course of his career—making it the 12th largest industry contributor.  In fact, half of that total ($252,050) was made to his campaign committee in the last few months, making the oil and gas industry the 10th largest contributor to Toomey this election cycle.

Founded in 2006,  and backed by over 400,000 supporters, the mission of VoteVets.org is to use public issue campaigns and direct outreach to lawmakers to ensure that troops abroad have what they need to complete their missions, and receive the care they deserve when they get home.  VoteVets.org also recognizes veterans as a vital part of the fabric of our country and will work to protect veterans' interests in their day-to-day lives.   VoteVets.org is committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world - with force when necessary - to protect America. While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.
