VoteVets calls on Kirk to repudiate Republican Senate Committee for insensitive tweet about Duckworth

CHICAGO, IL – The largest progressive veterans group in America, VoteVets.org, is calling on Mark Kirk to repudiate the Senate campaign arm of the Republican Party, for a tweet that was insensitive about Duckworth’s loss of her legs in the Iraq war.

The tweet from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), which was deleted, is screengrabbed below. It said, “Tammy Duckworth has a sad record of not standing up for our veterans.”

When asked by media if they would apologize, the NRSC refused in a statement, and blamed the media for paying attention to the tweet.

“This is horrifying,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org.  “Mark Kirk and his party, following their new leader, Donald Trump, are degrading people who have given their limbs in war, just because they're on the other side, politically. The GOP has sunk to a new, very dark low.  We sincerely hope Mark Kirk will repudiate the NRSC and their horrifically offensive tweet, and refusal to apologize.”

Here is the tweet in question:

Founded in 2006, the mission of VoteVets.org Political Action Committee is to elect Veterans to public office, with a focus on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, and hold public officials accountable for their words and actions that impact America's 21st century troops and veterans. Though VoteVets.org PAC is non-partisan, candidates it backs must support VoteVets.org's core mission and beliefs.
