Calls for Senator Flake to support universal background checks

Phoenix, AZ – The largest progressive group of veterans in America, VoteVets.org, with over 220,000 supporters is launching a powerful new ad today, calling for Senator Jeff Flake to support universal background checks for gun sales. The ad features Iraq War Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Glenn Kunkel, who fires an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at a mannequin, displaying the power of the weapon.  The initial run of the ad will be on social media, targeting those most interested in the issue of guns, specifically those in Arizona.  VoteVets.org said the ad could be expanded to focus on other Senators, as well.

The ad can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flo5MthVnAA

In the ad, Kunkel opens, holding an AR-15 and says, “I had to pass a background check to join the Marine Corps, before I could carry a weapon similar to this one in Iraq.  Here at home, anyone can purchase this weapon, no questions asked.”  He then fires off a number of rounds into a water-filled mannequin, which explodes with each hit.

“I support the Second Amendment, but we’ve seen what can happen when these fall into the wrong hands,” he continues.  At this point a picture of a memorial for those murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary is shown.

Kunkel then concludes, “I needed a background check to carry similar weapons in combat.  We should require the same here at home.  Call Senator Flake and tell him to support Universal Background Checks.”

Everyone volunteering for the military must pass a background check before entering the service.  But, as has been well documented, background checks are not required to purchase a weapon through private sales or gun shows.

Recent polling has shown support for universal background checks is at an astronomically high 85-to-90 percent among all adults in the United States, with similar levels of support among gun owners.  Yet, prospects for legislation in Congress to mandate background checks are murky, as the National Rifle Association lobbies against the views of gun owners, thousands of veterans like Glenn Kunkel, and Americans at large.

Founded in 2006,  and backed by over 220,000 members, the mission of VoteVets.org is to use public issue campaigns and direct outreach to lawmakers to ensure that troops abroad have what they need to complete their missions, and receive the care they deserve when they get home.  VoteVets.org also recognizes veterans as a vital part of the fabric of our country and will work to protect veterans' interests in their day-to-day lives.   VoteVets.org is committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world - with force when necessary - to protect America.  While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.
