After the attacks on September 11, 2001, Cal Cunningham volunteered to join the U.S. Army Reserve and has since served three active duty tours, including overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

In 2002, he received a commission as a First Lieutenant in the United State Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General’s Corps. In 2007, Cunningham attended the Judge Advocate Officer Advanced Course at Charlottesville, Virginia.  He deployed in 2007 to 2008 with XVIII Airborne Corps in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, to Camp Victory where he served as the senior trial counsel for the Multi-National Corps-Iraq.  In 2009, Cunningham transferred from the 12th LSO to 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) (DIMA) where he served as the Group Judge Advocate (Rear) at Fort Bragg.  In July 2011, Cunningham deployed with 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan where he established the position of Deputy Command Judge Advocate.  

He was awarded the Bronze Star and the prestigious General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award, in part for groundbreaking work prosecuting contractors for criminal misconduct.
