 ·, Press Release

Washington, DC – The largest group of progressive veterans in America today praised President Obama for pledging to protect veterans spending from any cuts, as Congress begins work to cut the debt, and noted that true savings can be found in the report just released today by the Commission on Wartime Spending, which identified billions in waste, fraud and abuse.

“We’re pleased that President Obama has committed to not balancing the budget on the backs of veterans,” said Ashwin Madia, Iraq War Veteran and Interim Chairman of  “We have always made a deal with those who served that we will take care of them when they get home.  In the midst of two wars, now especially is not the time to yank the rug out from under our nation’s veterans and returning troops.  It means a great deal that President Obama is willing to go to the mat to protect that promise, and we hope the members of the recently named Deficit Committee in Congress heed his words.”

Madia also noted that the Commission on Wartime Spending today released its report, finding that “as much as $60 billion in U.S. funds has been lost to waste and fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade through lax oversight of contractors, poor planning and payoffs to warlords and insurgents, an independent panel investigating U.S. wartime spending estimates,” according to the Associated Press.

“There is no doubt that we can spend money more efficiently in the military, and help balance the budget.  And before we go running to cut veterans spending or money for programs that provide for troops and military families, we should squarely focus on where there is truly waste, fraud, and abuse.  The Commission’s report gives us a great place to start,” Madia added.
